
Toronto, ON – May 7, 2025. The open seminar titled "Information Integrity in a Platform Society: Forging a Common Agenda,” as part of the FAIFE Midterm Meeting, held at Scott Library, York University on May 1, 2025, was a resounding success. The event successfully brought together 50 in-person attendees and drew over 160 online registrants, fostering a vibrant hybrid discussion.

The day began with registration and a warm welcome, leading into the official welcome address. Distinguished speakers including Joseph Hafner (York University), Jonathan Hernández (IIBI-UNAM, IFLA FAIFE), Diane Koen (IFLA North American Regional Division), and Leslie Weir (Librarian and Archivist of Canada, IFLA President-Elect) delivered opening remarks. Ms. Weir, in particular, set an inspiring tone for the day's discussions.

The keynote speaker, Fuyuki Kurasawa, Director of the Global Digital Citizenship Lab at York University, captivated the audience with his insightful presentation on "Navigating the Ethical Challenges of Machine Learning and Generative AI," moderated by Jonathan Hernández. Dr. Kurasawa highlighted the ethical implications of machine learning and generative AI, emphasizing the need for responsible and transparent AI practices.
The morning continued with a compelling panel on "The Front Lines of Information: Addressing Challenges in Canada's Libraries," moderated by Christina De Castell (IFLA FAIFE). Panellists included:
- Michelle Arbuckle, Executive Director, Ontario Library Association, who presented on "Ontario Libraries: Facing New Frontiers and Challenges"
- Jim Turk from the Centre for Freedom of Expression, who discussed "The Changing Focus of Library Challenges in Canada"
- Wendy Burch Jones from the Ontario School Library Association, who explored "Shielding Students from Censorship: Book Banning in School Libraries"

This panel addressed various challenges faced by libraries in Ontario and across Canada, including censorship and evolving library roles.
Following lunch and small group discussions stemming from the morning's presentations, the afternoon commenced with the session "Information Integrity and Intellectual Freedom Now: Global Updates and Future Horizons." Moderated by Joseph Hafner (York University), this panel featured:

- Jonathan Hernández, IIBI-UNAM, IFLA FAIFE
- Mike Nyby, CFLA-FCAB Intellectual Freedom Committee
- Maria de Brasdefer, IFLA HQ
- Lisa Radha Vohra, Toronto Public Library
Speakers provided crucial updates on global trends and offered insights into future directions for information integrity and intellectual freedom.
The subsequent session, "The Politics of Truth: Rhetoric, Reality, and Algorithmic Influence," moderated by Mariann Schjeide (IFLA FAIFE), featured:

- Jeff Newman from the University of Toronto, who presented "Revisiting the Master's Tools: Agency, Autonomy, and Authority in an Era of AI Algorithms"
- Sam Popowich from the University of Winnipeg, who discussed "New Struggles for Old Problems: The Philosophy and Politics of Rhetoric vs. Truth"
The discussion delved into the influence of rhetoric and algorithms on perceptions of truth, underscoring the vital importance of critical thinking and media literacy.
The seminar culminated in a thought-provoking panel (15:30-16:30) titled "What is the Value of the 'Truth'?: Exploring Today's Media Landscape and Its Impact on the Next Generation." Hosted by Jack Leong (York University Libraries) and moderated by Justin Poy (President and Creative Director, The Justin Poy Agency Inc.), the panel included:
- Gavin Barrett, CEO Barrett and Welsh Advertising
- Bill Hutchinson, Program Coordinator at Seneca College, Journalism, Former CTV News Toronto Anchor
- Amandalina Letterio, National Anchor/Producer/Reporter for Global News
- Anwar Knight, Reporter/Producer at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario

This engaging session explored the complexities of truth in the contemporary media landscape and its profound impact on the next generation, emphasizing media's role in shaping public perception.
The seminar wrapped up with closing remarks from Joseph Hafner and Jonathan Hernández.
