Part 2 (45 min)

Block 1: Video Recording (10 min)

  1. Camera positions/angles (slides 9-14)
    • Interviews: Camera at eye-level to subject who is centered or offset and looking off-screen at angle toward far side
  2. Camera movement (slides 35-39)
  3. Stabilization
  4. Consider BlackMagic Camera app for iOS devices and Android devices
    • Smartphone orientation: Landscape
    • Screen resolution: Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) or 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels)
    • Frame rate: 24 or 30 frames per second
    • If using app with applicable settings:
      • Shutter "speed" (time): 1/50 sec for 24 FPS or 1/60 sec for 30 FPS
      • Lens aperture: N/A (fixed for smartphones)
      • ISO: Auto or lowest possible while still resulting in good exposure
      • Monitor settings: Histogram, audio levels, grid

Block 2: Audio Recording (10 min)

  1. Physics
    • Distance
    • Reverb (sound reflection)
  2. Position: Place mic within one hand-length or one fist-length from mouth
  3. Audio levels
    • Avoid volume going near extreme limit of volume meters
    • Adjust as needed for peaks (or majority of dialogue) to be at -12 dB (+/- -6 dB)
  4. Demo of wireless mic systems: Note, if using external mics with smartphones (especially Android), you might have to select the external mic to use it

Block 3: Practice Recording (25 min)

  1. AV Recording
    • Group discussion/interview (thoughts, feelings of project/placement?)
    • Mock lesson
