Walking for York’s Libraries: A Big Step Toward Quiet Study Spaces

Walking for York’s Libraries: A Big Step Toward Quiet Study Spaces

On October 9, members of the York University Retirees’ Association (YURA) came together for their annual 5 km walk through York University’s Keele Campus—this time with a special goal in mind. Their steps helped raise just shy of $16,000 towards their goal of supporting students by the purchase of new quiet study pods for York University Libraries.

The event was marked by energy, lively conversation and camaraderie, and a shared commitment to supporting students and giving back to the University. Thanks to the generosity of retirees, friends, and supporters, YURA is already well on its way toward its fundraising target for this year.

Why Study Pods?

York’s libraries welcome between 7,000 and 10,000 students every day. A recent survey of more than 4,000 students sent a clear message: more private, quiet, bookable study spaces are urgently needed.

Study pods—soundproof, comfortable, and equipped with power outlets—offer the focused environment students need for online classes, job interviews, and serious study. Already popular at other Canadian universities, these pods will give York students a valuable new resource.

The YURA Challenge

Over the next three years, YURA aims to raise $30,000 annually to fund two pods each year—six in total. Each pod will include an inscription recognizing YURA’s enduring support for student success.

A Tradition of Giving Back

This year marks the seventh YURA Challenge Walk. Through past campaigns, YURA members have endowed student awards, bursaries, and supported food security initiatives. Their efforts continue to make a lasting difference on campus.
