Course instructors are encouraged to contact their liaison librarian or the Director of the Student Learning & Academic Success department (firstname.lastname@example.org) about effective approaches to developing students’ information literacy (IL) skills. These skills include the ability to find, retrieve, evaluate, analyze, use, cite and produce information. Liaison librarians are available to help course instructors in the following areas:
Research-based Assignment Design
Many course instructors develop research-based assignments for their students. In consultation with your liaison librarian, you can learn about new resources, what students struggle with when conducting research, and best practices for assignment design and IL. Read more about designing assignments in the humanities and social sciences to develop students’ research and information literacy skills.
Integrating IL into the Curriculum
It is impossible for a student learn everything about IL in one course or through one assignment. If IL is integrated into core or foundations courses, and built upon from first- to fourth-year, a more sophisticated understanding of IL concepts can develop.
