Enter the Miinkaanensing: Indigenous Student Art Competition

Co-create the Miikaanensing Indigenous Reading Room with York University Libraries!

The Libraries will be hosting a student art competition in Fall 2025 and we invite all Indigenous students to submit a piece of artwork to the competition.

We are accepting art in any traditional or contemporary format.  Flat pieces, such as paintings, poems, and beading, etc., will be framed and hung on the wall; three-dimensional pieces, such as basketry, sculpture, or metalwork, must fit securely on a standard-size bookshelf.

Benefits to participating:

  • This is a juried competition. We will be recruiting a team of jurors from the York University Community to choose three pieces of artwork that will be purchased and displayed in the Miikaanensing Indigenous Reading Room.

The purchase awards are:

  • 1st place $1000
  • 2nd place $750
  • 3rd place $500
  • All of the artwork entered into the competition will be displayed in a high-traffic area of Scott Library for a minimum of three weeks.
  • Artists with pieces not purchased will be given a letter indicating their participation in this curated juried art show.

Timeline:

  • Application deadline: October 22nd, 2025
  • Art Drop-off Date: Artwork must be dropped off at Scott Library by October 30th, 2025
  • Art Show:  November 5th - November 28th, 2025
  • Formal Opening of the Indigenous Reading Room: November 27th, 2025

Eligibility: You must be a current student or have graduated in 2023, 2024 or 2025 from York University. You must be Indigenous to Turtle Island. If the art is collaboratively created, the main artist must be Indigenous and a York student.
