How do I access e-resources from home?

You need to have either a Passport York account or a library barcode and PIN. Check here for more information on using electronic resources remotely.

Where are the books?

In the Scott Library, books are located on the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors (we call these the stacks). They are organized by call number. Call numbers beginning A-F are on the 3rd floor, G-N on the 4th floor and P-Z on the 5th floor. Look at this guide to Understanding Call Numbers (contains short video).

What if a book is not on the shelf?

Double check the status of the book in the library catalogue. It may be out on loan, at a different library, “in process” or in storage. You can request items using the following buttons at the bottom of library catalogue records: Hold/Recall Item, Intercampus Borrowing, In Process/On Order, Request from Storage. It is also possible that the book is in use within the library and will be returned to the shelf in a day or so.

If you have looked for a book multiple times and it is still missing, you can submit a Search Request. Library staff will search for the book and let you know if and when it is found. Print out this search request form and bring it to the Information Desk (2nd floor) or the Circulation Desk (1st floor). (Copies of this form are available at these desks.)

What if a book is not available at York University Libraries?

Check at other libraries for books York doesn’t have. York students can borrow directly from any other university library in Ontario (except the University of Toronto). Another option is to request an inter-library loan online through the RACER system.

You can make suggestions that we purchase items not in our collections by using this request for purchase form.

Where do I sign out books?

Books are checked out at the Circulation Desk on the 1st floor of Scott Library. You can also use the self-checkout machines, located beside the Circulation Desk. Remember that you cannot check out Periodicals (i.e. journals, magazines, newspapers)!

Where are the journals and magazines?

Magazines and journals are also sometimes called periodicals or serials. If available in print, the current issues (usually the last year) are located in the Periodical Reading Room on the 2nd floor while older issues are bound annually in hardcover and shelved in the stacks with the regular books. Some journals and magazines are available online, check the library catalogue by “Periodical Title”.

Where are the newspapers?

Current issues of selected newspapers are located in the Periodical Reading Room on the 2nd floor. Older issues are discarded. Online or microform options are available for some newspapers, check the library catalogue by “Periodical Title”.

Photocopiers?

There are self-service photocopiers on the 1st (in the Copy Centre) and 2nd floors of the Scott Library. All are equipped to handle the YU-Card, York University’s official photo ID and campus debit card. One photocopy machine in the Copy Centre on the 1st floor is equipped to accept coins.

Library photocopiers are designed to copy library materials only. Information on copyright is available near photocopy machines. Direct line phones are located in the Scott Library on each floor near the photocopiers to report equipment breakdowns. Copying from microform is available at Scott Microtext (1st floor).

Where can I add money to my YU-Card?

You can add money to your YU-Card, or purchase a Guest YU-Card, from the machines outside the Copy Centre on the 1st floor of Scott Library and also across from the photocopiers on the 2nd floor. For more information on the YU-Card go to: YU-Card printing/photocopying

Where can I get change?

You can obtain change only from the Welcome Services desk on the 1st floor (beside the library entrance).

Where are the washrooms?

Washrooms in the Scott Library are located around the escalator core on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th floors. Wheelchair accessible washrooms are on the first floor.
