Wayne Scott Ray (1950- ), poet, was born in Alabama, and grew up in Stephenville, Newfoundland and Woodstock, Ontario. He is the founder of the book distribution company HMS Press and has served as secretary/treasurer of the Canadian Poetry Association (1985-1988). He was also co-chairman of the League of Canadian Poets and served as the curator of the Field horticultural photographic collection. In 1988 he established the London chapter of the Canadian Poetry Association and in the following year he was recipient of the Editors' Prize, 'Canadian author and bookman', for best poet published in 1989.
The fonds consists of records relating to the Canadian Poetry Association, the League of Canadian Poets and HMS Press as well as personal papers and manuscripts. It includes general correspondence, publications (chapbooks) of associate members, copies of advertisements, newsletters, and correspondence related to the League of Canadian Poets as well as material related to the Canadian Poetry Association such as advertisements for readings, its constitution (1989), newsletters, correspondence of the London chapter, membership applications, related correspondence, and information on chapters in British Columbia and Ontario. Included in the material for HMS Press are advertisements, broadsheets, correspondence with poets whose work was distributed by HMS, business correspondence and publications of the press such as Sybil Jacobson: painting in the West (1985) and The three Roberts. There are also there are corrected typescripts, drafts, and computer printouts of poetry, diaries, notebooks, financial documents related to Ray's own work as well as correspondence with family members, friends and other poets and announcements of poetry readings.
