Waves was a literary magazine originally produced at York University (1972-1980) that grew out of a poetry workshop conducted by Irving Layton at the university during the 1970-1971 school year. It was devoted to prose and poetry, and was issued three times a year. The editor of Waves, Bernice Lever, also served as its office and business manager, circulation manager, and eventually became its owner in 1976. From 1980 until it ceased publication in 1987, Waves was produced in Lever's home.
The fonds consists of: production files (1971-1988) including correspondence between the editor and the contributors, typescripts, unsolicited manuscripts, and unclaimed submissions; funding basis (1972-1987) of subscription cards, correspondence with the Canadian Periodical Publishers' Association, and other funding sources; operation files (1972-1988) that include financial statements and records; taped interviews (1974-1977) conducted by Bernice Lever with Margaret Laurence, M.T. Kelly, and Dorothy Livesay and a CBC's interview with Laurence; posters and layouts for Waves; and books and journals (1966-1988) submitted to Waves for review, as well as single issues of journals from Canada and other countries.
