FAQ

Will the York University Libraries open during the labour disruption?

Yes. The Libraries will be open regular hours.

Will loan policies change?

Regular material will circulate in accord with normal policies.

Will I be charged library fines?

No. While overdue notices will continue to be issued by email during the labour disruption, no fines will accrue on any material.

What about Reserve materials?

Reserve material will circulate in accordance with normal policies with the following exception to ensure the integrity of the collection and fairness in access and availability;

Frost (Glendon Campus) and Steacie libraries
• 2 hour and 1 day loans will be designated for in-library use only
• 1 day loans must be returned each day before closing.

Sound and Moving Image Library
• 4 hour DVDs/VHS and Reserve items will be designated for in-library use only

Should I return library materials during the labour disruption?

We encourage you to return materials on time as a courtesy to others who may wish to continue their research and study during this time.  Alternatively you may choose to renew materials online (see below).

Can I renew library materials?

Yes. Books may be renewed in person or online via “My Library Account” on the Libraries’ home page. There will be no limit on numbers of renewals during the period of the labour disruption. If a hold is placed on a book you have out, we would encourage you to return the book if possible.

Will inter-library loan services be available during a labour disruption?

Yes. Our Resource Sharing Department is still obtaining interlibrary loans from other institutions; however, there may be delays due to disruptions in campus deliveries. Requests for interlibrary loans can be placed online using RACER. If you have further questions, please contact Resource Sharing at (416) 736-5808.

Will inter-campus borrowing services be operating between Glendon and Keele campuses?

Yes. However there may be delays due to disruptions in campus deliveries. Inter-campus borrowing requests can be made online using the Libraries’ catalogue.

What will happen when the labour disruption is over?

After the labour disruption is over,  there will be a grace period of several days during which overdue items designated for regular loans may be returned before fines again begin to accrue. Please consider renewing materials as they come due to avoid fines when the labour disruption is over.

Are there other alternatives for borrowing materials?

Yes. York University Libraries participate in reciprocal borrowing arrangements with other academic libraries across Canada. To use the libraries at these universities, present your YU-card at the appropriate desk and complete any necessary registration form. For information on borrowing at other university libraries see: https://www.library.yorku.ca/web/ask-services/borrow-renew-return/direct-borrowing-at-other-libraries/

Also please remember that York Libraries have extensive electronic resources (ebooks, ejournals, indexes, and other databases, etc.) and these are available from off campus.
