Event: The Office of International Programmes is established to act as the administrative arm of the York- Kenya Project, which trains Kenyan civil servants at York. Professor Tillo E. Kuhn is appointed Director, effective January 1, 1970.
The York University Transport Centre is established to promote, support and co-ordinate prorammes of study and research in the field of transport. Professor Ivan T. Feltham is Acting Director.

Event: The Senate approves the recommendation of the Council of the Faculty of Arts and Science that the name of the Faculty be changed to the ?Faculty of Arts.?

Event: The Schools Liaison Office of the University mounts a Symposium for Senior Students of Ontario Secondary Schools (January 22 ? 24). Ontario high school students are invited to submit research papers or creative projects on subjects of interest to each student. The entries will be judged by a panel of faculty members. The winners are invited to York to present and discuss their work, and stay on campus in residence.

Event: The Task Force on Canadian Education (a York body) meets to study the nature and development of Canadian education at York University. The task force will examine the citizenship of teaching staff and members of the major decision making bodies at York, look at what is taught and what is learned by York students, and the overall context in which the educational process is taking place. The Task Force on Canadian Education members are: Greg Beadling, Frances Gregory, John Huot, Terry Sulyma and Andy Stanley.

Event: The 1970 Frank Gerstein Lecture Series, ?Tradition and Revolution? runs from March 4 through March 18. The guest lecturers are Dr. Ivan Illich, founder and chairman of the Board of the Intercultural Centre of Documentation, Cuernavarce, Mexico; Dr. C.S. Holling, Professor and Director of the Institute of Animal Resource Ecology; Dr. George Grant, Professor of Religion, McMaster University; and Dr. Robert J. Lifton, Professor of Psychiatry, Yale University.

Event: The University of Toronto - York University Joint Programme in Transportation is announced by the Canadian Transport Commission. The Commission presents the Programme with a cheque for $140,000 and promises more money over the next four years. Plans for the Joint Programme include co-ordinated research activities.

Event: The Search for a new president has revealed a great deal of disunity between the Board of Governors and the faculty. There are many disagreements about the process of selecting a shortlist of candidates for the Search Committee. The Senate passes the following motion, "The Senate asserts that the Board of Governors would display bad judgement unless it appoints a candidate from among those receiving unqualified support by the Search Committee." This motion is also endorsed by the CYSF.

Event: At a Board of Governors Special meeting, the Board unanimously approves the Presidential Search Committee's recommendation to invite Dr. David W. Slater to assume the position of President and Vice-Chancellor of York University. Dr. Slater accepts. He will begin his term of office on July 1, 1970. (President Slater?s Installation is held on October 30, 1970)

Event: May 26 - May 31 is "York 10 Week." A university wide celebration of York's tenth anniversary. The university holds an open house for the public. There are Convocation ceremonies, there is an International Squash Tournament at the Tait McKenzie Building, official openings of three buildings, exhibits and displays by different Faculties and Departments, there is an exhibit of rare bibles in the Central Plaza, and a film produced by the Instructional Aid Resources Department, "York 10."

Event: The 'extension' of the 1970 Gerstein Lectures 'Tradition and Revolution' are presented as part of the "York 10" events on May 26, 27, and 28. "The Student Revolution" by Dr. Harold Taylor, former President of Sarah Lawrence College, N.Y.; "Protest and Prospect" by Dr. Jacob Bronowski, Senior Fellow and Trustee of the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego. These are followed by a Gerstein Lecture Panel discussing "Tradition and Revolution" with Lord James of Rusholme, Dr. Harold Taylor and Dr. Jacob Bronowski. Chaired by Dr. Lionel Rubinoff.

Event: The University Convocation Ceremonies are held outdoors on the paved area to the east of the Ross Humanities and Social Sciences Building. The Doctor of Letters, honoris causa, degrees are conferred on Canadian actress Kate Reid, Lord James of Rushome, Vice-Chancellor of the University of York, Mr. Robert McMichael, Curator of the McMichael Conservatory of Art, Kleinburg. The Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, degrees are conferred on Dr. Ralph J. Bunche, Undersecretary General of the United Nations, and Dr. Myres S. McDougal, Sterling Professor of Law at Yale University.
Following the Convocation ceremonies, the Ross Humanities and Social Sciences Building and the outdoor, Amphitetheatre are officially opened and dedicated.
In the evening, the Board of Governors hosts the University?s Tenth Anniversary Dinner to celebrate York's first decade, and to honour Dr. Murray G. Ross.
(The Glendon College Convocation is held on May 30, 1970 where Mr., McMichael receives his degree. 60 of the graduands are the first graduates of Glendon?s Honours Bachelor of Arts Programme.)
(Dr. McDougal's degree is conferred as part of Osgoode Hall Law School?s Convocation Ceremonies on Jun 5, 1970.)
